How your company can take advantage of what the service personnel bring to the new employer.

The Officers’ Association (OA) was established in 1920 in recognition of the distress and despair many officers found themselves facing when leaving the Armed Forces.  Many did not have private incomes or hail from privileged backgrounds – a misconception that is still prevalent today.  The work of the OA is as relevant now in helping officers and their families as it was nearly a hundred years ago when formed.

Officers leaving the Armed Forces are a diverse group; ranging from mid-20s up to 55 years old; a mix of technical backgrounds such as engineering, logistics, IT and communications, for example and non-technical backgrounds such as infantry, warfare or artillery.

The OA provide access to high calibre job seekers through their free Executive Jobs Board, and businesses can also take advantage of the resettlement package provided by the MOD.  A service leaver is also allowed a certain amount of time, through their Graduated Resettlement Time, to spend with an employer to gain work experience, normally to carry out a set project.

Ruth Whiteley was one of the Contestants in the 2015 top rated TV Show The Apprentice.  Unlike many of the would-be Apprentices to Lord Sugar, she has a successful pedigree in business and sales, having founded Impact Sales Training Ltd and built a private property portfolio of some 30 houses and commercial offices.  She recently purchased a Motorhome Depot Franchise also which she runs with her brother.

Having been self-employed since the age of 19, Ruth’s media background includes presenting the Morning Show on BBC Radio Leeds with John Boyd, appearing in the movie Calendar Girls, voice over work for Made in Leeds TV and working with Stray FM.  Over her career she has interviewed many household names including Joan Collins, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Jimmy Greaves and Ronnie O’Sullivan and received praise indeed from The Apprentice’s Baroness Brady who commented that Ruth was ‘a little scary’ but admitted that her techniques were ‘very effective and that I, myself have learnt something new’.  Developing her own Sales Training business, Ruth is also a motivational speaker who is asked to open and appear at business seminars and charity events.

Ruth raises funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and British Heart Foundation, speaks some Spanish, writes comedy and is a keen skier.
